Learn more about Jamu

Farm Direct

Our connection with Indonesia started in 2015. Since then, we’ve built lasting relationships with farmers who grow our herbs in rich, fertile volcanic soils. We’re privileged to source directly from people we know & trust.

Our Jamu Gold is based on an authentic recipe learned while living in Indonesia. It brings together five whole herbs in their natural form.

Anti-Inflammatory Herbs

Ginger & turmeric are among the most widely studied anti-inflammatory herbs.

Turmeric is naturally rich in curcuminoids & ginger in gingerols. These plant compounds can help support how our bodies respond to inflammation.

Turmeric Jamu FAQs

What is the difference between Jamu Gold & turmeric powder?

Turmeric powder is a single herb made from Curcuma longa. Jamu Gold is a traditional Jamu blend that combines turmeric with temulawak, red ginger, mango ginger & black pepper.

Choose turmeric powder if you want a versatile single herb for food or drinks. Choose Jamu Gold if you prefer a ready-made blend of whole herbs.

What is the difference between turmeric & temulawak?

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) and temulawak (Curcuma xanthorrhiza) are related plants from the ginger family, but they are different species. Temulawak is also known as Javanese or Java turmeric.

Both have a long history of use in Indonesia, including in Jamu, but they have different flavours, plant compounds & traditional uses.

Are turmeric, temulawak & white turmeric the same plant?

No. They’re related members of the Curcuma genus, but they are different plants. Turmeric is Curcuma longa, temulawak is Curcuma xanthorrhiza, and white turmeric is Curcuma zedoaria.

Each has its own characteristics & history of traditional use, which is why you’ll find them as separate herbs in our Turmeric & Jamu range.

Should I choose a Jamu blend or a single herb?

It depends on what you’re looking for. Jamu Gold combines five whole herbs in one traditional-style blend, while turmeric, temulawak & white turmeric allow you to choose an individual herb.

A single herb gives you simplicity & flexibility. Jamu Gold suits someone who wants a ready-made combination inspired by traditional Indonesian Jamu.

What is the difference between whole turmeric & curcumin extract?

Turmeric is the whole root and naturally contains curcumin alongside other curcuminoids, oils & plant compounds. Curcumin extracts are made by concentrating particular compounds found within turmeric.

Empathy Herbal focuses on whole-herb powders rather than concentrated curcumin extracts. If you’d like to understand the difference in more detail, read our Turmeric vs Curcumin guide.

Can turmeric powder be used to make Jamu?

Yes. Turmeric is one of the herbs traditionally used in Indonesian Jamu and can be prepared as a simple herbal drink.

If you’d rather use a ready-made combination of herbs, Jamu Gold brings turmeric together with temulawak, red ginger, mango ginger & black pepper in a whole-herb blend.

What should I look for when buying turmeric in Australia?

Start by checking what you’re actually buying: whole turmeric or an extract, a single herb or a blend, and powder or capsules. Look for clear ingredient information, botanical identity, responsible sourcing & appropriate quality testing.

The best choice depends on how you plan to use it, not on choosing the product with the strongest-sounding claims.

Are Empathy Herbal turmeric & Jamu products quality tested?

Empathy Herbal uses quality testing to help check the safety & integrity of our herbal products. Testing may include areas such as microbiological safety and contaminants, depending on the product and batch.

We also work closely with our suppliers and focus on knowing where our herbs come from, rather than relying on testing alone.
